RFID Types of transponder


RFID identificiation systems with passive transponders (i.e. without batteries) can be categorised by the used frequency range:

LF – Low Frequency
Frequency range 9 kHz – 135 kHz
Advantage: By usage of spools with ferrite core a miniaturised model of the transponder is possible.
Disadvantage: Low data transmission rate, low standardisation.
Configuration: Disk-transponder, glas-transponder, chipcard

HF – High Frequency
Frequency range 13,56 MHz
Advantage: Fast data transmission (typ. 106 kBits/s), application of signal coding methods is possible. HF-Transponder are available standardised and inexpensive
ISO 14443: Safety application, range approximately 10 cm
ISO 15693: Broad application area, range up to 1 m
Common configurations: smart-label, chipcards, hard-tags with plastic case

UHF – Ultra High Frequency
Frequency area 868 MHz (USA: 915 MHz)
Advantage: High range and fast data transmission
Disadvantage: Functional capability very dependent on material, bigger antenna (>8 cm).
ISO 18000-6: New standard for UHF-identification. Range up to 10 m
